Science is where theory is put to the test. You do not need to have a degree in science to create an award winning project, just the curiosity to observe and document. While all award winning science projects adhere to the scientific principle and proper documentation, they do not have to be complex. Here are several easy projects that require little in the way of equipment or time.
Human Effects on the Environment
Testing runoff can identify an environmental problem.
Both students and scientists are concerned about the environment. Selah Intermediate School was the top school in the 2001 Washington State Science and Engineering Fair with projects like "The Effect of Human Development on Water Quality and Stream Pollution." The experiment examined runoff in a creek above and below a developed area. The water was tested for nitrates, phosphorous and turbidity. This project could be adapted to different locales, seasons and other forms of pollution.
Mushrooms
Mushrooms are a type of fungi plant.
One of the more unusual and intriguing plants are mushrooms. Kits and supplies for growing mushrooms are readily available on the Internet. The inquisitive student can come up with a number of angles for an award winning project using mushrooms. A sixth grader in Atlanta won his science fair contest with a project that examined the effect of different fertilizers on mushrooms. Other ideas for mushroom projects include testing different soil types, temperatures and moisture.
Nutrition
Food projects use common kitchen ingredients.
Food and health science fair projects can be both practical and easy. A side benefit may be to encourage the student to embrace healthier habits. The Science Made Simple site lists several ideas that include comparing vitamin C levels in fruit and measuring the amount of iron in breakfast cereal. Practically any food item or ingredient can form the basis of a project. Different varieties of a food item can be compared and contrasted for nutritional value.
Which Antacid Is Most Effective?
Common bathroom items can inspire award winning projects.
Common bathroom items such as soap, toothpaste, shampoo or antacids can form the basis of a science project. In 2010 a boy advanced to the California State Science Fair with his project, "Which Antacid Is the Most Effective Acid Neutralizer?" The project required only a minimum of materials, including eggs and a variety of antacids. Science teachers assisted the student in getting test tubes and chemicals. The experiment itself was conducted over a 24-hour period and the results documented.
