Curtains can be a defining aspect of a living room. Large windows may benefit from the long, graceful lines of a traditional drapery or a more contemporary sheer fabric. A wide of variety of curtain choices are available to dress your living room window. Take a good look at the layout and color scheme of your living room and start searching. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose your colors. Living room accent colors are a good place to start when deciding curtain color. You may want to match the curtains to accent colors in the rug or throw pillows.

2. Decide if you want curtains to cover the window completely when closed or if they are being used only as an accent to your living room design. Heavy, closed curtains block out light and heat. Light-weight curtains let light and heat into the room.

3. Take note of the lighting in the room. You may want to let as much natural light in as possible so look for a thinner, lighter colored curtains. If the room is too sunny heavier, darker curtains could help temper the bright light. Take note of the evening light in the room. Different fabrics will reflect the artificial light differently.

4. A valise may be added over the rod.

Choose your curtain’s design. The simplest curtain design is four panels that slide on a rod using rings. This design is good for light to medium weight fabrics. For a more austere look you may consider a valise across the top of the window. This may be a solution for masking the more complicated mechanics for hanging heavier fabrics.

5. Add curtain layers. Curtains can be purchased lined or unlined. You may also want to layer a sheer curtain underneath a heavier curtain. This allows you to shut the sheer curtain while leaving the heavier outer layer gathered elegantly at the sides. This may also simplify changing out your curtains seasonally, using the sheer for summer and the heavy fabric for the winter months.
