Instructions

1. Choose the best location for your tomatoes. This will be an area that gets at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day.

2. Purchase your Black Krim tomato plant from a garden center. Gently remove the plant from its plastic container and carefully tease out the roots if they have begun to wind tightly in a circle. Clip off any extra-long roots.

3. Dig a hole that will accommodate almost the entire plant when held vertically. Water the hole.

4. Break off all the tomato plant's branches except a few at the top. Don't worry; this won't harm the plant. Place the rootball at the bottom of the hole and stand the plant up straight.

5. Backfill the soil around the plant, just under the top branches that you left on. The plant will generate roots all along the buried main stem, producing a stronger plant.

6. Place the legs of the tomato cage directly over the plant and push the legs into the soil. As the plant grows, its branches will reach up through the cage and support the plant, increasing circulation and warding off disease.

7. Mix fertilizer and apply to your plant regularly according to the package directions. For tomatoes, you will need a fertilizer which is low in nitrogen so that there is not too much vegetation at the expense of fruit.
