Make Natural Soap Bars

Making your own natural soap bars can be beneficial to your skin.

The process of making natural soap bars has been around for centuries and is one alternative to using store-bought soaps that can contain harsh, skin-irritating chemicals. Making your own natural soap bars can be beneficial to your skin because it is much more mild than traditional soap and gentler on the skin. Natural soap bars are usually made from oils, fats and lye, and clean your skin without leaving behind a greasy or oily film. By making your own soap, you can control the ingredients, shape, color and scent. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Pour water into a sauce pan over low heat, then slowly pour in the lye using a wooden spoon. Stir the lye mixture until the powder has completely dissolved then pour into a large bowl and set aside. Always protect your eyes and skin by wearing rubber gloves and eye goggles when working with lye. Lye can irritate and burn your skin. Never lean over the mixture or breathe in its vapors. Always add lye to water, not water to lye.

2. Combine the lard and lavender oil in the sauce pan over medium heat until the lard has melted. If you wish to use additional oils, scent or color, add them and heat the mixture to 110 degrees. The amount of scent and color you use depends on how strong you want the scent and how dark you want the soap.

3. Slowly pour the lye mixture into the sauce pan and stir continuously until all ingredients are thoroughly combined then remove from heat. Allow the mixture to cool for an hour.

4. Pour your soap mixture in a plastic dish pan and cover with a wash cloth. Allow it to cure for seven days before cutting it into bars.
