Recipe For Shea Butter Lotion

You can easily make your own shea butter body lotion at home. Shea butter imparts a luxurious, soft feel to the skin. It moisturizes and conditions your skin, leaving it feeling revived. Look for shea butter and other soap making or beauty supplies at your local craft supply store or through online retailers.

Supplies

The supplies you will need to make shea butter body lotion are: 1 lb. of shea butter; 1/2 oz. jojoba oil; 1 vitamin E capsule; fragrance or essential oils; optional dyes; a double boiler; wooden spoon or stirring stick; stick blender; and a jar or jars for packaging your body lotion. Ensure that you have a clean, dry work area. This recipe should make several small jars or bottles of lotion.

The Process

Melt the shea butter in a double boiler over medium heat until it becomes very soft and just about melted all the way through. Once the shea butter has melted, but is still firm, remove from the heat. Add in the 1/2 oz. of jojoba oil and incorporate into the shea butter using a stick mixer. Blend the mixture together on the highest speed for about four minutes.

Let the shea butter mixture rest for about three minutes, then resume mixing on low speed for another four minutes. Let the shea butter and jojoba concoction rest for another three minutes. Add the contents of the vitamin E capsule, which will act as a preservative for the lotion. Incorporate completely into the mixture using the stick blender, and let it rest once again. Over-whipping the mixture can cause it to break down into an unpleasant texture. Add one or two drops of your favorite fragrance or essential oil, such as lavender or rose, to the shea butter, and blend on low speed with your stick blender. You can also add a few drops of coloring if desired.

Allow the shea butter lotion to cool completely. It will be fairly thick in texture. You can place in the refrigerator if you want to speed up the cooling process. Once the mixture has cooled, use the wooden spoon to place the mixture in jars of your choice. Make sure to seal the jars tightly to prevent contamination from the air. Store your shea butter lotion in a cool, dry place.
