There is really no average cost of food in a household budget because there are just too many variables to factor in. What it comes down to is finding out how much you can afford to pay for groceries and stick to it even if you have to change some eating habits.


To come up with your own household budget, begin with your net income (bring home pay) for the month. Then determine the bills that have to be paid such as rent, mortgage, insurance, car payments, gas and any type of payment you make on a regular basis. The next step would be determining what you can afford to pay for food on a monthly basis with what is left of your income.
