Who Are The Four Living Creatures In Revelation

One of four beasts in Revelations has the face of a lion.

Revelations is the last of the 66 books in the Christian Holy Bible. It deals with end time event predictions as seen by Jesus' disciple John while on the Isle of Patmos. The text refers to four living creatures, also called beasts, but interpretation is left open to men, as this part of the text has not happened yet and cannot be viewed from an historical perspective.

Heaven's Occupants

In the book of Revelations, the four living creatures (beasts, as they are referred to) are located physically in heaven. In addition, the creatures are in the presence of God and around the throne, the elders and angels, as well as the saints. These four beasts are not mentioned as being part of activities recorded in the Old Testament, such as when Daniel was visited by an angel, or anywhere else in the New Testament, such as the announcement by an angel to Mary, of Jesus' impending birth. These four creatures appear to be heaven's occupants only.

God's Praise Team and Announcers

A well-known and respected California Christian with a doctorate in theology and a ministry known as "Grace To You," John MacArthur, posits that these four beasts are angels. This would be in keeping with scripture, since God uses angels to deliver messages, fight battles and lead other angels in worship. The fact that these beasts are in heaven in God's presence, making announcements about the end times in Revelations chapter 6 verse 1 and worshiping God in Revelations chapter 4 verse 9 would support this premise. These creatures repeatedly praise God, as other angels do in heaven, saying, "Holy, holy, holy" as depicted in Revelations Chapter 4, verse 8.

God's Fearsome Warriors

In the Old Testament Book of Daniel, Daniel is visited by an angel having the appearance of a man but also having eyes like fire, a face like lightening and arms and feet like polished brass. This angelic creature fights other creatures in order to deliver a message to Daniel from God. One of the New Testament beasts is likened to having the face of a man, too, but with six wings on its body and eyes all over. The other three beasts also have wings and eyes all over, but have looks similar to a lion, a calf and a flying eagle in the New Testament book of Revelations, chapter 4, verses 6 through 8. In both the Old and New Testament, people such as Jesus' mother, the virgin Mary, are told "Fear not" when they first encounter an angel and see their physical appearance.

God's Servants

The four beasts in Revelations are just like any other creature made by God: His servants.
