The amount of pasta needed to replace rice depends on the style of pasta.
Whether you want to change up your favorite casserole recipe or are just trying to use the ingredients on hand, there are times you will need to substitute pasta for rice. Most recipes measure ingredients by volume, but a cup of rice will typically weigh much more than a cup of pasta. A simple conversion of measurement from volume to weight can tell you convert any amount of rice to the pasta of your choice. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Instructions
1. Read the recipe you are using. Determine if the original recipe calls for white rice or brown rice.
2. Determine whether your kitchen scale measures in ounces or grams. Note how many cups of rice the recipe requires, then multiply that amount by 5.5 ounces (165 grams) for brown rice, or 5 ounces (150 grams) for white rice.
3. Measure out a cup of the pasta you have on hand. Place an empty bowl on your kitchen scale and tare the scale (set the scale to zero.) Pour a cup of pasta into the bowl and make a note of the weight.
4. Determine how many cups of pasta it will take to get the same weight as the number of cups of rice required by figuring out how many cups of pasta will add up to the amount of ounces or grams of rice the recipe requires. You can do this by dividing the gram or ounce amount of the recipe by the gram or ounce amount in one cup of pasta. If the recipe requires 7.5 ounces or 1.5 cups of white rice, for example, and a cup of pasta weighs 2.5 ounces, you will need 3 cups of pasta to equal 1.5 cups of rice.
