Foods That Have Soybeans In Them

Tofu is a food that is made of soybeans.

Soybeans are one of the most widely grown legumes. They contain a large amount of protein, and they are used in many foods. In addition, soybean products are very important to the petroleum market. If you have a soy allergy or simply need a non-animal source of protein, knowing the most common foods that contain soybeans can help you eat in a healthy manner. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Tofu

Tofu is also known as soybean curd, which is made by curdling hot soymilk using a coagulant. Soymilk is made, as the name implies, from soybeans. The consistency of tofu is like a soft, bland cheese, and when used in cooking, the tofu quickly picks up the flavors of the dish. Tofu is low in sodium, high in B vitamins and high in protein. Many different types of tofu are available, including firm tofu, tofu powder and silken tofu.

Soymilk

Soymilk is made from soybeans, which are soaked and then ground into fine powder. The powder is strained from the liquid, producing soymilk. Soymilk is often used as an alternative for cow's milk, specifically by individuals who are lactose intolerant. The milk is also used as a milk substitute by vegetarians who do not want to drink milk produced from an animal. Soymilk available at the store is fortified with calcium and additional vitamins. You can purchase it in several flavors, such as vanilla, chocolate or strawberry.

Miso

Miso is the substance used to create miso soup and as a flavoring in many Asian dishes. Miso is quite difficult to make, and you cannot do it at home. To make it, manufacturers combine soybeans with salt and mold and then leave it to age for one to three years in large cedar vats. Miso can sometimes be made with barley or rice instead of soybeans, so read the label. Lighter miso is aged for a shorter time period than darker miso, which can be aged for more than two years.

Tempeh

Tempeh is made from fermenting soybeans using a type of mold called rhizopus, which causes the cooked soybeans to form white cakes. Tempeh is very firm and is described as having a mushroom or a nutty flavor. Tempeh is typically sliced and fried and added to salads, soups, sandwiches and spreads. Tempeh is high in protein and contains isoflavones that have been found to have many health benefits.
