Homemade Hotdog Cooker

A homemade hotdog cooker is a tasty alternative to using the microwave.

A homemade hot dog cooker is ideal for camping. You can use a variety of ways to build a homemade hot dog cooker. Cook them without a stove or grill, using a few materials that you likely have lying around. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Brick Method

Over a campfire, place two cinder blocks to serve as a table. Place a flat garden brick (previously cleaned and sterilized) over the cinder block table. You then put your hot dogs onto the garden brick, turning occasionally so they don't burn. They should cook very quickly -- within 10 minutes, depending on the thickness of the garden brick.

Solar Method

Cover a shoebox in aluminum foil. Place the hot dog in a glass butter dish (with a lid) and place the entire dish in the foil-wrapped shoebox. The light will reflect off the sides of the box and cook the hot dog. This method takes from 1 1/2 to 2 hours, depending on the amount of sunshine.

Warnings

Always use proper safety measures when working around fire. Use thick gloves or tongs to protect your hands, and keep children away from hot surfaces. When removing the lid from the butter dish, use a towel or pot holder.
