Directions For Cooking A Turkey On A Gas Grill

Turkey is cooked in a variety of ways.

The traditional method of roasting a turkey is in a conventional oven, but many are trying other ways of getting the holiday bird to the table. Options include deep frying, electronic roasters, microwave and charcoal grills. A turkey can be cooked on a gas grill as well, either propane or natural gas. Choose a turkey in the 8- to 16-pound range and thaw it thoroughly in the refrigerator before the day of the feast. Do not stuff the turkey. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Light the grill according to manufacturer's directions. The temperature needs to be kept between 225 and 300 degrees Fahrenheit to safely cook a turkey. Place a thermometer inside the grill, if it does not have a built-in one.

2. Fill a shallow pan with water and place beneath the cooking grill if you have a one-burner grill, as the turkey needs to be cooked by indirect heat.

3. Place the turkey in a roasting pan and place inside the grill. Place the turkey over the pan of water, in a one-burner grill, or place the turkey to one side in a two- or three-burner grill. Turn off one of the burners to create a space for the turkey in its roasting pan.

4. Cook the turkey until the meat thermometer reaches 165 to 170 degrees; it will take about the same length of time to grill a turkey as to roast it in the oven. Add charcoal, about 15 briquettes per hour, if using a charcoal grill. Check the chart on the turkey wrapping for cooking times.
