Make Wheatgrass Juice

Grow wheatgrass at home and juice it fresh.

When wheat is first planted, it sprouts into a bright green, flat-bladed, tender plant that looks like lawn grass. After a few weeks, it develops into a tough, tube shaped plant and eventually it develops a seed head that is harvested for wheat flour and other products. Wheatgrass juice is made from the tender early blades. The juice provides vitamins and minerals, but only trace amounts of macronutrients such as protein. Although its "superfood" reputation may be overstated by some, if you enjoy wheatgrass juice, try making it fresh at home.

Instructions

1. Plant wheat berries on a flat planting tray filled with planting soil and allow it to grow indoors, watering daily or as needed, in a sunny spot. Keep soil moist but not soggy. Within a few days of planting, you'll see fresh green sprouts peeking out from the dirt.

2. Cut the wheatgrass off with scissors just above the dirt eight to 14 days after it sprouts, while it is still bright green.

3. Rinse thoroughly in a colander.

4. Juice the wheatgrass by hand in a hand-crank juicer or in an electric juicer.
