The Most Humane Meat & Chicken Products

Certified-humane meat is available both in whole-cuts and processed forms.

Consuming humanely raised animal products guarantees consumers that they are supporting animal husbandry practices that provide clean and healthy environments for animals. Meat products that meet the stringent requirements of the Certified Humane and Handled nonprofit organization carry a label indicating this organization's approval. Add this to my Recipe Box.

History

The Certified Humane organization developed its guidelines based on the findings of a committee that included veterinarians and animal scientists. The standards are dynamic, as the organization applies ongoing research standards to its guidelines for ensuring safe and humane animal husbandry.

Practices

Growers and producers apply for certification by filling out forms. The organization will the inspect the facilities, examining both the animals' living environment and the slaughterhouse. Once approved, participants in the Humane and Handled program must reapply annually to maintain the distinction.

Considerations

The requirements for certification include providing nesting areas, shelters, enough room for the animals to exercise natural behavior and a good diet that does not include hormones or antibiotics except for sick animals. Animals must have access to clean water at all times.

Types

All animals raised for food, including cattle, pigs, deer and birds of all kinds, can be raised humanely. The guidelines also apply to dairy products like milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt and eggs, along with processed meat like sausages or hot dogs.
