According to Renae Hamrick, a registered veterinary technician, the cockapoo is a combination of the cocker spaniel and the poodle. Both the cocker spaniel and the poodle are purebreds and therefore breeding the two together can result in various health issues, such as seizures.
Causes
Cockapoos can suffer from seizures for a variety of reasons: contact with toxins, congenital defects, tumors within the skull or certain diseases such as epilepsy.
Symptoms
Seizures are most often seen as uncontrolled muscle spasms. The cockapoo may also display other symptoms such as salivation, vomiting, collapse, behavioral changes or loss of consciousness.
Diagnosis
When a seizure occurs and the cockapoo is brought into a veterinarian, the veterinarian will inquire about recent medical history and perform a physical exam. To determine the cause of the seizure, blood tests and X-rays may be used.
Treatment
In some events, a seizure may never reoccur. However, some cockapoo dogs may require anti-seizure medications for the rest of their life.
Prognosis
The prognosis can vary from dog to dog, depending on the underlying cause. If the cause is due to excessive consumption of a toxin, the prognosis may not be good. However, in many cases the affected cockapoo can live out his lifespan with the help of medications.
