How Kill Fire Ants

The two species of fire ants, the red fire ant and the black fire ant, arrived in the United States in the early part of the 20th century. Both were accidentally imported to Alabama, probably in cargo from South America. The red fire ant has since spread to much of the Southern states, occupying gardens and homes. Fire ants can inflict painful stings on humans and pets, which in some cases causes serious and potentially fatal allergic reactions. Most householders don't want fire ants on their properties and you may be able to kill off the colonies yourself, although persistent colonies require professional treatment. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Locate the nests. Fire ants build distinctive mounds that are not difficult to find. You can also follow trails of ants to see where they lead.

2. Pour panfuls of boiling water over the mound several times. This may be sufficient to kill the ants.

3. Lay out commercial ant bait or a home alternative such as sugar and water laced with borax. For the home remedy, mix one part borax with three parts sugar and sufficient water to form a paste. Position saucers with the bait in areas of high ant activity that are inaccessible to small children or pets. Ants take the poison back to the nests and share it, killing the whole colony.
