Get A Food Box

We all need a little bit of help at times. There are organizations that will give you a food box to help you feed your family until your next payday. If you need help getting a food box, or have never gotten one before, here are the steps to follow.

Instructions

1. Call America's Second Harvest: (800) 771-2303. It is a national food bank association. This group can help you locate a food box in your hometown. They can give you names and phone numbers of the places in your area with one phone call.

2. Look up the names and locations of local charity organizations in your town. St. Vincent de Paul or the Salvation Army are excellent places to look for food boxes. Local churches are usually a good bet. These differ from town to town and there are no 800 numbers for these organizations.

3. Call around for dates and times. Some places will only give out food boxes at certain times and on certain days of the week. Call ahead of time to understand the restrictions. Sometimes, if demand for food boxes is high enough at a particular place, they may require you to schedule an appointment to pick one up.

4. Prepare for your food box appointment. Whether you have to call ahead of time and schedule an appointment, or if it’s just a walk-in appointment, you will need to have some paper work when you go in. These will usually include a social security card, and a birth certificate.

5. Collect your food box. Once you have all of the paperwork in order, all you have to do is show up. The organization that you chose may require you to give a signature, or write down the social security numbers of the members of your household.
