Peel Garlic Before Planting

Choose a large garlic bulb to plant in the garden.

Garlic is a simple-to-grow member of the allium and onion family. Garlic is ideally planted on the shortest day of the year, or late in the fall, in all hardiness zones. A large, locally grown, garlic bulb is recommended for purchase and planting. Individual cloves found within the garlic bulb are the seeds. You must break apart the bulb but do not peel the individual cloves. Growing garlic is an enjoyable garden project to undertake with children. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Layers of a papery thin peel cover the garlic bud.

Pull the papery peeling away from the outer area of the garlic bulb.

2. Break the large outer cloves off the bud with your fingers.

3. Individual cloves are pulled apart from the main bulb.

Pull the bulb completely apart and break the center cloves out of the bulb. Set aside any small cloves to use for cooking. The largest cloves are best for planting.

4. Separate each healthy large clove from the bulb mass. Leave the peeling on the cloves. The peeling will protect the interior of the cloves during its dormant period in the garden soil.

5. Place the cloves in a container to transport them to the garden.
