Historically cheesecloth was very common in households, before cheese was manufactured on a larger scale
Cheesecloth is essentially a straining decide for separating whey and cheese curds during cheese preparation. However, the material has other functions, and can be used to create removable seasoning packets, strain sauces and other liquids, and reduce the liquid content of foods like yogurt, among other uses. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Location
Cheesecloth can be found in any conventional cooking supply store, better grocery stores, and occasionally hardware stores. Additionally, it is widely available online.

Cheesecloth comes in several grades, marked #40 or #90, for example. The numbers indicate how easily the cloth allows liquid to pass through -- the higher the grade, the thicker the material.

Cheesecloth typically costs between $3 to $5 per item as of 2010.
Substitution
According to Gourmet Sleuth, a clean flour sack kitchen towel can substitute for cheese cloth when straining liquids.
