Organic California Orange Trees

Organic orange trees are those that have not been genetically engineered and have naturally evolved in different areas around the world. Some of these have been transported to different farming areas of California from the San Joaquin Valley to the tip of Southern California. California has a wide range of climates that are suitable for different types of organic orange trees. Northern California has a cooler climate that receives more precipitation than the Mediterranean climate of southern California. Does this Spark an idea?

Washington Navel

The Washington Navel orange tree is an organic variety that was introduced to California in 1873. The orange tree originated in Bahia, Brazil. The tree produces large fruit with a thick peel and rind that is easy to remove. The fruit has a superior flavor but is not ideal for juicing, as it tends to create less juice than other varieties. Because it thrives on lower temperatures, the orange tree is more suited to Northern California climates. The fruit reaches harvest point in December.

Trovita

The Trovita orange tree grows in hot and dry climates and is therefore often planted in areas that the Washington Navel is not suited for. The tree produces fruit that has a mild flavor and few seeds. The fruit reaches harvest point earlier than other varieties. It is also sometimes referred to the Robertson Navel, Summer Navel or Texas Navel.

Valencia

The Valencia orange tree is the most popular variety in California. Agricultural historians believe that the Valencia originated in China and was transported to Europe by Spanish explorers. English horticulturalists transported the plant to California in 1976. The tree produces fruit that is smaller than the Washington Navel and has a thinner rind, but it has more juice, a richer flavor and very few seeds. The tree thrives in a warm climate, which makes them popular in Southern California and the San Joaquin Valley. It is also commonly grown in Texas and South Africa.
