Compost Your Kitchen Waste

A plastic bin is the vessel of choice for many composters.

Kitchen composting reduces the amount of waste your household produces -- instead of tossing those vegetable scraps, eggshells and coffee grounds in the garbage, use them to make nutrient-rich compost to feed your garden. For the best results, you'll need to mix together yard waste such as grass clippings and leaves with kitchen scraps in a large bin, pile or composter. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Place an empty coffee can, preferably plastic, in your kitchen. Fill it with fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and tea bags as you use them.

2. Cover the can when it's not being filled. Poke holes in the lid of the can with a hammer and nail to allow air to circulate. To prevent odor, glue a charcoal filter to the underside of the lid.

3. Empty the can into a compost bin or pile along with yard waste.

4. Mix the compost so that the fresh kitchen scraps are buried several inches beneath the yard waste.

5. Water your compost to keep it moist as necessary.

6. Use the compost as potting soil or to fertilize your garden when the material is uniformly dark brown -- this will take at least a couple of months.
