Survive Living In A College Dorm

Living in a dormitory is an entirely new experience for most college freshmen. You have to live with a person you most likely don't know and be surrounded by a dorm full of people you've never met before. But for many people, living in the dorms turns out to be the best part of their college experience. Using a few simple guidelines, you can be one of those people as well.

Instructions

1. Try hard to get along with your roommate(s). Being friends with your college roommate, or at least getting along reasonably well with him or her, will be a key factor in having a good dorm life experience. Even if you don't get along very well, always make an effort to be civil, since living with a person you're constantly fighting with can be pretty miserable.

2. Meet your dorm mates. Some of your closest friendships, both while in college and after graduation, will be with the people you meet in your dorm. Dorm life will be far more tolerable, and even downright fun, when you get to know those living around you.

3. Attend any dorm orientation meetings offered (or in some cases, required) at the beginning of the semester. This will give you the opportunity to meet your resident advisor and find out the rules of the dorm.

4. Find ways to avoid dorm-life scenarios that you don't wish to be part of, such as late-night partying or an activity that breaks dorm rules. Having a good exit strategy will help you avoid being part of anything you don't want to be involved with as well as potentially keep you out of trouble with school officials.

5. Participate in any activities offered by your dorm, such as school-sponsored dorm parties or dorm-related student government. Getting involved will provide you with a great opportunity to meet the people in your dorm and enrich your college experience in general.

6. Keep your room tolerably clean and organized. Vacuuming weekly may not be necessary, but when living in such a confined space as that of a dorm room, a messy and disorganized environment can drive anyone crazy after a while.

7. Do not neglect schoolwork in favor of partying with dorm mates every night of the week. The temptation to party with your neighbors in the dorm can be overwhelming, but relegate these activities to the weekend. Getting poor grades in school is not worth the trade-off.
