Equivalent Sugar Substitutes

There are a number of sugar alternatives available.

Gone are the days when the only choice to sweeten your tea is sugar or honey. Today's consumer has a wide variety of natural and artificial sweeteners that are calorie free, inexpensive and sweeter than table sugar. There are even branded sweeteners on the market such as Stevia, Splenda and NutraSweet. Add this to my Recipe Box.

NutraSweet

One of the first artificial sweeteners on the market, NutraSweet is the brand name for aspartame. Aspartame about 200 times sweeter than table sugar, or sucrose. However, aspartame also has drawbacks to table sugar since it doesn't perform well in baked goods. Today, Aspartame is becoming less common than other sugar substitutes.

Splenda

Splenda is the trade name for Sucralose and is about 600 times sweeter than table sugar. It performs similarly to table sugar in baked goods and even comes in different forms to make it more similar to brown sugar specifically for baking. Splenda consists of sugar in a process that creates a substance with increased sweetness and zero calories.

Stevia

Stevia is about 200 times sweeter than table sugar and uses an herb called Stevia Rebaudiana. Stevia is virtually calorie free and can replace table sugar in baking, especially since its sweetness is equivalent to table sugar.
