Reduce The Amount Of Gas Produced By Beans

Regardless of whether you find the very topic to be rude, there's no denying that eating beans gives people gas. An array of over-the-counter dietary aids purport to help eaters reduce the amount of gas caused by beans, but there's another approach you can try. By preparing your beans in a specific way, you can actually remove much of the gas without reducing the flavor or changing the consistency. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Place your beans in a large bowl or pot and add enough water to cover the top layer. Allow the beans to soak for as long as your recipe calls for, but before walking away, add 1 tsp. fennel seeds to the bath.

2. Strain your beans when they are done soaking, and dispose of the soaking water.

3. Start with a cold pot and cold, fresh water. Begin cooking the beans over medium heat.

4. After 15 minutes, remove the pot from the heat and strain the beans again, disposing of the cooking water. Immediately refill the cooking pot with water, and put the pot over high heat until boiling.

5. Reduce the heat to medium and add the beans. Finish cooking the beans per your recipe's instructions. This process will remove most of the gas from the beans, making your recipe easier on the stomachs of your diners.
