Frugal Housecleaning Hints

Use frugal cleaning methods in your kitchen to save money each month.

One of the nicest things about choosing to clean your home as frugally as possible means that you are also switching to a "greener" way of cleaning as well. By using basic ingredients, you can cut down on both the chemicals you consume and the number of plastic containers your household goes through. Best of all, by making the switch to more frugal housecleaning methods, you'll end each month with more money in your pocket.

Keep It Simple

The most basic cleaning supplies are also the most useful. Vinegar, baking soda, ammonia and water are all very inexpensive to purchase and don't contain complex lists of ingredients and chemicals you can't pronounce. Not only are these items frugal to buy, but small quantities go a long way, so you'll only have to buy them occasionally instead of every week.

Make Your Own

Make your own cleaners and save money every time you clean. Use white vinegar or ammonia to clean glass and bathroom fixtures, baking soda to clean and whiten tile and grout and combine baking soda and vinegar to clean the entire bathroom. Combining baking soda, borax and grated soap will yield a high-quality, frugal laundry detergent. Replace chemical ironing sprays with spring water that has been scented with your favorite essential oil.

Switch to Fabric

Make the switch from paper products to fabric and you'll save money on paper towels and paper napkins. Buy inexpensive cloth napkins or make your own, and you can save on more than paper products. Cloth absorbs better than paper, so if you use a cloth napkin, you'll do a better job of protecting your clothing and tablecloths from stains and spills, reducing your cleaning costs. Even the cheapest paper towels are a dollar a roll -- switch to cloth and you'll save money every week!

Cut the Power

Switch to manually operated cleaning methods whenever possible. Skip the dryer and put your clothing on a clothesline. Not only will this help them look "new" longer, it will save you money on the electric or gas bill as well. Use a broom instead of a vacuum and wash clothing with cold water instead of hot. Implementing just one of these switches will save you money in multiple ways.
