Extract Methane Gas

Cows produce manure, which produces methane gas.

As people throughout the world seek ways to protect the environment, greater emphasis has been placed on utilizing methane gas, or biogas, for electricity. The gas is created from animal and municipal waste. Studies from leading scientists throughout the world have shown methane gas contributes to global warming. However, many of those same scientists recognize the ability to use the gas for electricity, a simple method that even people less-developed countries are using. Farmers in North America and throughout Europe hook a gas generator up to a biodigester to utilize methane.

Instructions

1. Mix the manure up before you put it into a biodigester. Bacteria in the manure breaks it down to produce methane gas.

2. Turn on the heat of the biodigester; turn the temperature to around 98 to 103 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the manure in this range for processing.

3. Add soda water to speed up the breakdown. This is particularly helpful when the manure's nitrogen levels are high, which usually occurs when the manure is dry. Add enough to make it as moist as fresh manure. The methane will rise to the top of your biodigester. The biodigester will collect it.
