Cooking Minnesota Wild Rice

Wild rice makes a tasty side dish to gourmet meals.

Wild rice, which has a nutty flavor and slightly chewy texture, is grown in the United States' Great Lakes region. According to the University of Minnesota, the rice is harvested in the north and north-central areas of Minnesota and is the state grain. Wild rice can be a healthy part of your diet, as the university also states that the grain is high in protein and fiber. Boil the rice and serve it alongside a wide variety of dishes, such as chicken and fish. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Place 1 cup of wild rice in a bowl and rinse it with three changes of water. Drain the rinsed rice in a colander.

2. Place 4 cups of water and 1 tsp. of salt in a medium saucepan. Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Add the rinsed wild rice and stir to blend. Return the water to a boil.

3. Cover the saucepan. Reduce the heat to "low" and simmer the rice for 45 to 50 minutes, or until it is tender; some grains may be slightly split.

4. Drain the rice in a colander and pour it back into the pan or a bowl. Add seasonings, such as butter, salt and ground black pepper, to taste.
