Directions For Sticky Rice

Serve sticky rice as part of a Thai-themed meal.

You may have been served a sweet, sticky rice if you've ever eaten at a Thai restaurant. Sticky rice is a particular type of rice eaten in the northern regions of Thailand. Sticky rice is different from the more common jasmine rice in terms of texture and taste. Traditionally, it is eaten with your hands, shaping it into clumps with your fingers and dipping it into curries and other sauces. Sticky rice is also served as a dessert with fruit such as mango because of its sweetness. A steamer is all you need to cook sticky rice at home. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Pour the rice into a large bowl and pour in two to three inches of cold water, enough to just cover the rice. Leave the rice to soak for at least three hours, or overnight, up to 12 hours.

2. Line a steamer basket with cheesecloth.

3. Fill the pot of the steamer with water just until it reaches the steamer basket. Bring to a boil.

4. Drain the rice and add it to the steamer basket lined with the cheesecloth. Place the steamer basket into the steamer pot.

5. Cover with a lid and allow the rice to steam for about 20 minutes. The rice will look shiny and feel tender when it is ready.

6. Turn the stove off and allow the rice to stand for five minutes while still covered, before serving or using as a part of another recipe.
