Crab cakes with remoulade sauce is a popular Southern meal.
There's nothing like a good crab cake--a southeastern coastal specialty--but many people are unsure about what to serve with them? Crab cakes are one of the most versatile dishes there are: Premade or made from scratch, they can be served as casual picnic fare, a quick weeknight dinner, brunch or the centerpiece of a formal meal. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Quick Meals
Pick up some premade crab cakes at the fish market or grocery, plus a bagged salad and a loaf of bread, and you have a super fast family meal. Or fix some quick-cooking rice or cheesy grits and slices of fresh tomato, with tartar or cocktail sauce on the side.
Picnic and Lunch Meals
Make or purchase crab cakes for an outdoor meal, with cole slaw or potato salad and corn on the cob. Crab cakes can also be served on toasted hamburger rolls for crab cake sandwiches. For cookouts, you can grill crab cakes like burgers, but you'll need a mix with a little extra breadcrumb binding--or set a small, flat baking sheet on the grate and cook as you would on a skillet.
Formal Meals
A crab cake can make an elegant main dish, served with rice pilaf or risotto and asparagus. The crab cake can be placed on a mound of polenta or creamy Parmesan mashed potatoes. Upscale restaurants often serve crab cakes alone, with a spicy remoulade sauce garnish.
Breakfast or Brunch Meals
A crab cake sandwich with home fries or grits is a savory hot breakfast you can make at home or order at some coastal diners. Crab cakes can be served as an alternative to sausage, bacon or scrapple with eggs and toast. Serve cocktail sauce on the side.
