Simsbury, Connecticut, doesn't lack for quality restaurants.
About half an hour northwest of Hartford, the historic town of Simsbury was established in 1670. In the years since, its citizens have worked to preserve its quaint charm, earning it numerous distinctions. The National Trust for Historic Preservation lists Simsbury among its Dozen Distinctive Destinations and Money Magazine selected it as one of the Top 100 places to live. Not surprisingly, Simsbury restaurants offer diners a wide array of options, from pizza to gourmet fare to ethnic cuisine. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Abigail's Grille and Wine Bar
Formerly known as Pettibone's Tavern, the building housing Abigail's dates back to 1780, when it served as a meeting place to transmit news of the Revolutionary war. Part of the Mill Restaurant Group, a chain of three restaurants in Connecticut and Massachusetts, Abigail's extensive menu features both classic and eclectic fare. Traditional items include steaks with a choice of four dressings, seafood, rack of lamb, homemade pasta and wood-fired grilled pizza. On the less conventional side, consider the schnitzel salad or the Long Island duck quesadillas, filled with Manchengo cheese, roasted peppers and black beans, then ladled with a smoked corn salsa. A raw bar serves rotating selections of oysters, shrimp, clams, mussels and calamari. Abigail's is open for dinner only Saturdays and for both lunch and dinner all other days, serving a special brunch menu on Sundays with gourmet dishes like seafood crepes and filet mignon benedict. The tavern and wine bar features a happy hour on weekdays.
