Farming offers many career benefits
There are many types of farmers in a variety of agricultural sectors, from beef cattle to flowers, and the environments and methods also vary by geographic location and philosophy. However, according to the US Department of Labor, almost all farmers work long hours outdoors for relatively low pay compared to other careers. Despite these apparent drawbacks, farming offers many substantial benefits and offers workers a great deal of freedom and flexibility.
The Outdoors
While some farmers grow plants hydroponically in controlled indoor environments, most grow plants or raise animals outside. While many people might find working in the outdoors and being exposed to the elements a drawback, most farmers see it as freedom from having to work inside in an office. In the outdoors a farmer can appreciate the beauty of nature and not feel restrained by walls or cubes.
Rural Living
While most jobs require a person to live near an urban center, a farmer has the ability to live in a rural area. Rural areas are often desirable for the clean and generally safe environment and the sense of community.
Self-Employment
According to the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the average farmer makes $43,000 per year. While farmers often work 60 hours a week or more, they have a flexible schedule and work from home. Not only do they usually work with their families on a daily basis but farmers have the freedom of being their own boss.
Variety
The work on a farm is varied and changes from day to day and from season to season. Farmers have to grow plants and raise animals but also maintain machinery and buildings, run a business, manage staff, market products and perform a variety of other tasks. Some farms run all year but many farmers have the winter off and only work on maintenance and planning.
Values
Farming is values-based. This means that while the rewards of farming may not be chiefly monetary, and it is not a very comfortable career, it is very fulfilling and offers workers a deep sense of satisfaction. The process of growing food, and ultimately feeding people, gives farmers immense self-worth.
