Coconut oil comes from the meat of a matured coconut. Coconuts are a popular tropical fruit, and coconut oil has been a main source of dietary fat for tropical peoples for hundreds of years.


Uses in Food


Virgin coconut oil can be used to replace other oils and fats usually used in cooking.


Health Benefits


Due to its high saturated fat content, it has been believed that virgin coconut oil is not healthy; however, scientists are beginning to find that it may be beneficial. According to Dr. Raymond Peat coconut oil can help with weight loss and hypothyroidism, and according to a study completed by Dr. Conrato S. Dayrit, it can help with HIV and AIDS. It has a number of antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties.


Traditional Use


In addition to its place in tropical and Asian cuisines, coconut oil has often been used as a lamp oil.


Skin Care


Coconut oil has been found to be an excellent moisturizer, and has been used as such. It's also been used to make soaps, massage oils, cosmetics and lubricants.


Fuel


Coconut oil is finding its place as a biodiesel, and is commonly used in tropical countries, such as the Philippines, as an alternative fuel source.


Warning


Though virgin coconut oil has been found to have health benefits, it is important to avoid using hydrogenated coconut oil, which is found in many nondairy creamers and candies.
