The Best Curtain Fabrics

Curtains are one of the best accessories for your windows.

Curtains are the leading accessory for windows; however, they're not only for aesthetic purposes. They also perform important functions such as blocking out the sun in the summer and keeping drafts out in the cooler months. Privacy is another perk curtains provide, especially if your room looks out onto a busy street. When choosing fabrics for curtains, consider the thickness and weight of the fabric as well as the style and print. Does this Spark an idea?

Velvet

Velvet fabric, which is generally heavy and therefore has a nice fall to it, exudes luxury. It is the fabric of choice for south-facing rooms that are generally cold in winter months. Due to its thickness, velvet keeps cold air out and warm air in. Available in rich deep colors, velvet complements carpeted rooms and goes well with antique-style furniture. On the downside, velvet is heavy and requires professional cleaning.

Silk

Silk fabric is elegant, feminine and lighter weight than velvet. However, like velvet, it's good in keeping cold out of the room. Because silk absorbs dyes easily, this fabric comes in different bright colors. Giving the room a softer look, thanks to this fabric's ability to drape well, silk curtains are most suited for rooms that don't have direct sunlight--due to the fact that it fades easily. To help keep it from fading, add an interlining to silk curtains, which will also make them feel more substantial. Like velvet, one drawback with silk curtains is they require professional cleaning.

Linen

Linen is the traditional material for curtains. A less expensive alternative to velvet and silk that's more durable, linen curtains are more resistant to fading. Therefore, they're suitable for use in rooms with direct sunlight. Offering a more masculine feel than velvet or silk, linen curtains are a good choice for bachelor pads.

Cotton

The most common fabric used for curtains, cotton is also the most affordable. Made from natural fiber, cotton curtains comes embroidered or in different printed designs. This fabric very versatile and is not get damaged by moisture; therefore, it's the best choice for bathroom curtains and a popular option in children's bedrooms.
