Eat Chia Sprouts

Many people's first experience with growing Chia is with Chia Pets---terracotta animals and people whose hair and fur is composed of Chia sprouts. However, what many people do not realize is that Chia sprouts have a high nutritional value as they are packed with essential vitamins and minerals. Chia sprouts can be added to a variety of raw and cooked dishes. In order to eat Chia sprouts, you must grow them and trim the sprouts when they get to the appropriate height. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Grow the sprouts in a sunny location until they are approximately one week old---harvesting them too soon will result in very small sprouts, as they are already small to start with.

2. Trim the sprouts from the roots and rinse them carefully in a fine mesh strainer with cold water.

3. Sprinkle the raw sprouts on sandwiches or add them to salads and other raw dishes. They have a taste similar to broccoli, with a bit of an added spiciness.

4. Cook the sprouts in your favorite stir-fry recipe, or steam them along with other vegetables to add a spicy flavor. Chia sprouts can also be added to soups to increase their nutritional value and add flavor.
