Care for a Cockapoo
Cockapoos are created by breeding a cocker spaniel with a poodle. With the increased popularity of hybrid breeds, cockapoos are one of the few designer hybrids that have been around since the mid 20th century. Due to their cocker spaniel genes, cockapoos are particularly friendly and loyal. Cockapoos shed very little and work well for people with allergies, thanks to their poodle genes. Like most hybrid breeds, cockapoos stay clear of many health issues associated with purebreds. Though their care is not intense, they do require daily maintenance.
Instructions
1. Feed your dog a healthy diet of dog food. While it may be tempting to give your cockapoo your leftovers, avoid doing so as this will upset his stomach. Instead, stick to a quality dog food. While you can give your pup treats occasionally, avoid deviating from his standard diet too often.
2. Provide a constant supply of fresh water. Your cockapoo's water bowl should always have adequate water in it. Change the water every day to keep it fresh and free of debris.
3. Walk your cockapoo at least twice daily. As a medium-sized dog, cockapoos do need regular exercise. If you have a yard, allow your pup to play in it for about two hours daily. Cockapoos work fine in apartments and condos; however, you must commit to walk your dog at least twice a day. Make sure you have a sturdy collar and leash to use on walks.
4. Brush your cockapoo daily. The length of a cockapoo's coat varies from dog to dog. If your pup has shorter hair, you may only need to brush her once a week. As cockapoos have both an overcoat and undercoat, it's imperative that you brush both. Invest in a good brush that reaches to the undercoat.
5. Shampoo your cockapoo once a month. This will help to keep his coat healthy and shiny. Use dog shampoo as human shampoo may irritate your cockapoo's fur and skin.
6. Brush your dog's teeth once a week, using a toothbrush and toothpaste specially made for dogs. Regular brushing is essential to keep your dog's teeth healthy and free of tarter.
7. Clean your cockapoo's ears once a month. Due to their floppy ears, cockapoos are particularly prone to ear infections. Use cotton balls and a dog ear cleaner to gently clean the inside of your dog's ears. Do not reach far inside the ears. Simply swipe the easily accessible areas. If you notice a foul odor or rash, take your dog to the vet as it could be an ear infection.
8. Clip your dog's toenails every other month. You can do this at home, using dog nail clippers, or you can take your pup to a professional groomer. If you clip them, make sure to avoid the quick--the red vein that runs through the toenails.
9. Cut hairs that obstruct your cockapoo's eyes, nose or mouth. You want your dog to be able to see, breathe and smell clearly. Enlist the help of a friend who can hold your dog's head steady while you trim the area.
