Recipe For Dog Rash Cream

Recipe for Dog Rash Cream

Skin health reflects the condition of the internal organs. Rashes and other skin conditions may be an indication of a deeper health issue from poor circulation, genetic influences, poor diet or environmental toxins (see Reference 1). If your dog has a rash or a skin irritation, have a veterinarian check his health. For treating dogs with itchy, irritating rashes and minor skin irritations, a helpful and easy homemade rash cream can soothe and cool the skin.

Aloe Vera

Use 1/2 cup of aloe vera lotion as the base of your rash cream. According to Shawn Messonier, D.V.M., in his book "Natural Health Bible for Dogs and Cats," aloe vera contains prostaglandins that help with skin conditions like allergic reactions, redness and swelling and wounds. Aloe vera also contains a constituent called acemannan, which is a polysaccharide. This constituent is an immune booster that benefits many skin problems. Aloe also has antifungal and antibacterial properties.

Although aloe vera gel is generally considered safe, the dog should not be allowed to ingest the topical cream. Aloe vera, when taken internally, acts as a powerful laxative. Avoid using aloe vera on pregnant or lactating dogs and those with severe kidney or liver disease (see Reference 2).

Vitamin E

Pierce a gel cap of vitamin E oil and add it to the aloe vera gel. According to Richard Pitcairn, D.V.M., author of "Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats," vitamin E is helpful when applied to inflamed skin (see Reference 3). Vitamin E is well-known for its antioxidant properties. It may also improve immune function, an important property for treating rashes and skin irritations (see reference 2).

Comfrey

Mix 1 tsp. of powdered comfrey leaves to the cream. Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) contains allantoin, a constituent that aids in cellular healing. It is also effective in treating inflammatory conditions and skin irritation. External use of comfrey is safe. However if taken internally in large quantities or over an extended period, it may cause liver damage or cancer (see Reference 2).

Calendula

Add 1 tsp. of powdered calendula flowers. Calendula is an effective addition to the rash cream as it has antifungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Like comfrey, calendula aids in increasing cellular healing. Do not use calendula on pregnant dogs as it could induce abortions.

Thoroughly mix the rash cream and apply to the dog's skin. Using ingredients like aloe vera, vitamin E, comfrey and calendula in this rash cream helps provide healing benefits without the use of steroids or antibiotics. If your dog has any serious health conditions, consult your veterinarian before using this cream.
