Control Food Portions

Control Food Portions

One of the main causes of obseity is out-of-control food portions. Restaurant portions are double the size they were a generation ago. Here are some sensible ideas for controlling food portions that are easy to apply and can help you attain or maintain a healthy weight.

Instructions

1. Start out your meal by eating about half as much as you think you want. By starting with smaller portions, you'll give your body time to decide if it's had enough.

2. Ask for a carryout box as soon as you get your meal at a restaurant. Put half of the meal in the box before you start eating. Because of the large portions restaurants serve, you'll probably be full eating just half of the meal.

3. Steer clear of "all-you-can-eat" buffets. This is the worst temptation of all when trying to control food portions. Many people eat to the point of feeling sick after going to a buffet.

4. Buy sweet treats in pre-packaged single servings. Treats such as ice cream, which come in large containers, are too easy to over-indulge. Buy a package of single servings instead, such as ice cream bars.

5. Eat a salad before lunch or dinner. This curbs your appetite before the main course so you'll eat less.

6. Order a kid's meal when eating at a fast food restaurant. This not only controls portions, it also saves you money.

7. Eat several small meals instead of one or two large meals. Many people have the mistaken idea that skipping a meal will reduce their calorie intake. Instead, it tends to make them over-eat.
