Boil Basmati Rice

Get perfectly fluffy basmati rice with these simple instructions.

Basmati rice is long-grained rice with a delicate flavor grown mainly in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Fittingly it is often associated with the cookery cultures of those countries and is commonly served alongside curries. Due to its longer grains Basmati rice requires a slightly different cooking method to white rice, but with a little care and attention it's remarkably easy to boil delicious, fluffy Basmati rice. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Wash the Basmati rice in three changes of cold water. This ensures it will go fluffy after being cooked. After washing leave it to stand in a final batch of fresh cold water for 30 minutes.

2. Drain the water from the rice. Place the rice into a saucepan adding one pint of water for every pound of rice you're cooking. Bring the rice to the boil and cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid.

3. Put the heat on a low setting and leave the rice to cook for 10 minutes. After this time has elapsed switch the heat off completely, leaving the rice to stand for another 5 minutes while the lid remains on.

4. Remove the lid from the saucepan. The rice should have absorbed all of the water it was cooked with and now requires only a light gentle fluffing with a fork before being ready to serve.
