Make your own Homemade Hair Butter for Healthier Black Hair
Black women with natural or relaxed hair may notice that a lack of shine and elasticity usually stems from a lack of moisture and nutrients. Coconut, jojoba and olive oils can add shine, and shea butter adds moisture for strong, soft hair. Commercial hair butters can be pricey and refined with ingredients that may water down the butter so you won't get the full effect needed for your hair type. Healthy hair comes at a price, but with the right ingredients, it can cost less than a commercial product. Making homemade hair butter saves you money and provides you with the opportunity to monitor everything that goes onto your hair. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Use a spatula to slide the unrefined shea butter and coconut oil into a double boiler. Let the oil and shea butter melt slightly but not completely. The shea butter and coconut oil must still have a chunky consistency. If the oil or butter liquefy, wait for them to solidify again before proceeding any further.
2. Transfer the shea butter and coconut oil mixture into a mixing bowl. Add the jojoba, olive, almond, peppermint and rosemary oils to the mixing bowl. Pour them slowly, stirring with the spatula, to incorporate each oil one at a time.
3. Use a hand mixer to blend the concoction well. You must keep mixing until few or no lumps remain in the mixing bowl. This smooth mixture should have no oil floating on the top.
4. Use a spatula to transfer the mixture into an 8-oz. container with a lid. Do not use it until the mixture sets; this may take around one hour. Store the container in a cool, dry place until you need to use it.
5. Apply a small amount the mixture after styling or washing your hair. The amount of hair butter this recipe makes will last for many months on shoulder-length or longer hair.
