Make A Compost Bin

Build your own compost bin.

In nature, composting is what happens as leaves pile on the forest floor and begin to decay. The decomposing leaves are broken down into the soil, where roots can begin the recycling process and claim the nutrients from the decomposed leaves. Scientists think that when early peoples dumped food wastes in heaps near their campsites that the wastes rotted and became perfect habitats for the seeds to sprout.Today, we use composting to turn organic wastes into a “green” gardening source is expanding rapidly in the United States, as people become more aware of the impacts of chemical additives have on the environment. Building your own compost bin creates a creative and economic way to make compost for gardening. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Build the first side. To create the first side panel, place five of the 39 by 6 planks across two of the 33-inch battens. Ensure the sawed ends of the plank are flush with the outside edge of the battens.

2. Finish the first side and build the second side. There should be a 2-inch gap between the bottom plank and end of each batten. Using two nails or screws for each, attach the planks to the battens. Repeat to make the second side panel.

3. Build the back panel. To create the back panel, hold these two side panels upright, 39 inches apart, by nailing scrap wood to straddle their tops. Starting at the top, nail or screw five of the 24 by 6 planks onto the side panels. For the front panel, nail or screw the two 31-inch battens just inside each front upright to create a housing for three of the 24 by 6 sliding planks, ensuring the planks fit between the battens.

4. Stabilize the compost bin. To ensure stability of the structure when the front planks are removed, nail the two remaining 24 x 6 planks to the top and bottom of the front panel. You may want to nail a small piece of wood into the bottom in the space between each of the front battens to hold the sliding planks securely in place.
