Why Do Jews Eat Kosher Foods

Jews have been keeping kosher for thousands of years. Keeping kosher is a lifestyle and a tradition, but most of all, it is a commandment that Jews must observe in order to fulfill their covenant with God.


Laws


The basic laws of kashrut (keeping kosher) appear in the Torah in Leviticus 11, and are repeated in Deuteronomy 14. These laws are presented as direct commands from God, which indicates that they are extremely important.


Self-Discipline


Moderation and self-restraint are also important practices in Judaism, and keeping kosher can be seen as one aspect of this.


Health


Some people believe that kosher foods are healthier because of the extra care taken in their production and preparation.


Avoiding Cruelty


Some of the laws regarding kashrut have to do with avoiding cruelty to animals, so Jews can feel confident that animals have been treated properly and killed humanely in the process of becoming kosher meat.


Reminder of Holiness


Another reason Jews keep kosher is to make the mundane act of eating into something holy. Choosing kosher foods brings to mind the other rituals and commandments associated with being Jewish, and encourages Jews to perform them.
