Prepackaged Survival Foods

Prepackaged survival foods are a must to have in an emergency situation.

If you are facing an emergency situation that leads to a shortage of food, having some prepackaged foods stored in your pantry or basement could save your life. At least a three-day supply is necessary. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Grocery Store Food Vs. Survival Food

Specially made survival food will last much longer than regular grocery store food.

The differences between regular grocery store food and survival food is the shelf life and what you intend to do with the food. Survival food is meant to be stored away for emergencies only, and it should have a long shelf life. According to survival-center.com, "you can't store grocery store items for five to ten years, as you can with specially freeze-dried or sealed foods packed in nitrogen or vacuum sealed." You will need to keep replacing grocery store foods as they get older.

Store-Bought Foods to Stock

Canned goods lose taste and nutrition after their expiration date.

There are some basic foods that need to be stocked when preparing for an emergency. Canned goods will keep for longer than others and can be bought cheaply from your grocery store. According to ready.gov, you should "select foods that require no refrigeration, preparation or cooking and little or no water." Avoid salty foods to decrease thirst.

Homemade Canned Goods

Homemade canned goods will last you about three years.

Homemade canned goods are another way to stockpile your food supply in case of emergency. Tomatoes, pickles cucumbers, and any other food that can be canned at home will stay edible for about three years. Vacuum packing foods is another way to store food for emergency.
