Salem, the capital of Oregon, lies at the center of the Willamette River Valley, less than 50 miles south of Portland. With a population of roughly 150,000, Salem is the Beaver State's second largest city. The area was settled in 1841 by Jason Lee and other Methodist missionaries, and named and extablished as a townsite in 1851, according to the Salem Visitor Center website. This Native American-owned campground is located just off Interstate Highway 5 in Salem, about four miles north-northeast of the center of the city. Full hookups, including free cable TV, are available at all of its 139 sites, 114 of which are pull-throughs; the other 25 sites are back-ins. Big rigs are welcome. Other amenities at the resort, which opened in 2006, include wireless Internet access, a community room with kitchen, seasonal outdoor swimming pool, indoor hot tub, heated gazebo with barbecue grill, library, playground, restrooms, showers and exercise room. Pets are allowed.
