Laundry

You can use borax in standard and high-efficiency washing machines to boost your laundry detergent. Add 1/2 cup of borax to every load of laundry in addition to your normal detergent. Borax naturally softens hard water, helps remove stains and brightens whites. You can presoak laundry in 1 gallon of warm water and 1 tablespoon of borax or presoak with borax by allowing the washer to fill and adding 1/2 cup borax. Turn the washer off and allow it to soak for 30 minutes, then start the washer and add the detergent. For delicates, only 1/4 cup of borax is needed.

Bathroom

You can use borax to clean and freshen your bathroom. Sprinkle borax directly on a sponge and use it to scrub your tile, tub, sink and fixtures. Pour 1/4 cup of borax into your toilet and use a bowl brush to scrub it clean. Let it soak for 30 minutes and flush it away.

Kitchen

Kitchens can be deodorized and cleaned with borax. Sprinkle it on a damp sponge to clean dishes, appliances and surfaces. Pour 2 to 3 tablespoons of borax into your drain to deodorize it. Allow it to remain for 15 to 30 minutes, then flush your drain with hot water. Add 1/4 cup borax to your dishwasher to boost your dish detergent and prevent spots.

Clean Carpets

Borax can also be used to clean and deodorize carpets. Dissolve 1/2 cup into 1 pint of water. Sponge the solution onto the carpet and allow it to sit for 30 minutes. Soak up the solution with a dry towel. Rinse your carpet with a clean damp sponge. Wait for your carpet to dry and vacuum it.

Preserve Flowers

Even fresh flowers can benefit from use of borax. Cut the flowers and make sure they have no surface moisture. Sprinkle a layer of borax into the bottom of a shoe box. Place the flowers on top of that bottom layer of borax and sprinkle them with more borax until they are covered. Put a lid on the box and allow it to remain for 7 to 10 days. Once dry you can remove the flowers and store them in a cool dry place.
